City Sonic Vilnius – About
City Sonic Vilnius is a platform dedicated to sound art, experimental music and interdisciplinary artistic practices. Developed through a collaboration between Užiateka and Transcultures Europe, it builds on the legacy of City Sonic, the international festival founded in Belgium in 2003 by artist, curator and producer Philippe Franck (1963-2025).
Initiated by Transcultures, the Centre for Digital and Sound Cultures of the Wallonia-Brussels Federation (Belgium), which also coordinates the international Pépinières Européennes de Création network, City Sonic has explored the diversity of contemporary sound-based artistic practices since its inception. Installations, performances, audiovisual and multimedia works, interactive environments, invented instruments, electronic, contemporary, experimental and improvised music, sound poetry and radio art all contribute to an open artistic landscape where disciplines intersect and continually reinvent themselves.
Combining an international outlook with a commitment to developing local artistic scenes, City Sonic fosters encounters between emerging and established artists, championing distinctive approaches, experimentation and site-specific works that engage with their surroundings. Its approach is rooted in creating connections between territories, places, artistic practices and creative communities.
Building on this vision, City Sonic Vilnius develops a programme of artistic residencies, performances, exhibitions, workshops and encounters across Lithuania, particularly in its capital. Coordinated by Užiateka and Transcultures Europe, the project encourages collaborations between Lithuanian, Belgian and international artists through an interdisciplinary, participatory and inclusive approach.
Through these exchanges and creative processes, City Sonic Vilnius seeks to contribute to the development of a contemporary sound art scene with an international outlook, while fostering lasting collaborations between artists, cultural organisations and territories.
